The first services of the Episcopal Church in the Lemhi Valley were conducted by Bishops Tuttle and Talbot on an irregular basis beginning in 1879 in various locations until semi-annual visitations began around 1901 under Bishop Funsten. In 1902, the first Episcopal Church in the area was founded about 30 miles south of Salmon. Known as the Trinity Mission, it held services at the Lemhi Indian Agency until the agency closed and services began in Salmon proper, with the establishing of the Church of the Redeemer.
The church itself seats approximately 250 people with additional room in the choir stalls; the stone from the local Shoup Quarry was used in the construction of the building at the corner of Courthouse Drive and Fulton Street and the structure has been listed in the National Register of Historic Buildings since 1979. The church has remained open to worshippers for almost 125 years, without major interruption. The most notable feature from either the exterior or interior is the “Christ in Gethsemane” window. It was added in the 1930s by the Ford Brothers Glass Company following the wartime years of the First World War and is illuminated throughout the year during the evening hours.
Currently, along with the original church building, the grounds also include a rectory and the ‘Parish Hall’, completed in 1954. The Parish Hall now serves as the location for various offices and meeting spaces for church and community events. Following our mission of being a community of believers serving the community of Salmon, the Parish Hall is often used for church gatherings and celebrations as well as events such as a meeting place for local organizations, book clubs, recitals, Arts Council events (including being the home of the Salmon Arts Council Offices), and, most recently, as the host for Salmon’s newly established PRIDE events in late May-June. Redeemer was most recently awarded a grant of $30,000 by the Steele-Reese foundation for updates to the Parish Hall to enhance and increase our ability to serve the people of Salmon and its surrounding environs across the Lemhi Valley.
We are a parish family where all are welcome to join us as they are. Knowing that we all are equally children of God, we embrace our neighbors as welcome family, not just as guests, in whatever manner they join us. We also endeavor to be ‘God’s hands in the world’ as we live out our own lives following the example of Christ as servants of our neighbors.
In an effort to maintain ties with our community, we often join local area churches for joint or ecumenical events such as our Shared Summer Services once a month from June-August, Advent study series during late November and December, and our shared Lenten Soup Lunches. Members of Redeemer join together with the people of the First Presbyterian, First Methodist, and St. Charles Borromeo Catholic churches to enrich our worship, ministry and lives, together.

Currently, the Church of the Redeemer is led by the Bishop’s Missioner Brother Andee L. Book, a life-professed friar in the Anglican Order of Preachers. Our church elects representatives to its Vestry in three-year revolving increments, currently led by Senior Warden, Karen Baumert and Junior Warden Lloyd Crawshaw. Other Vestry members and officers are: Pam Reed, Sharon Perry, Merry Logan, Maggie Seaberg, and Jean Copland Hadlock, supported by Sandy Nelson, treasurer and Father Bob Perry, a retired priest of Redeemer in residence in our Parish.
